Exchange With McQuire

#SnippetSunday #FirstLines, MM Neo Noir Thriller: What’s An Exiled LAPD Officer To Do?

(Miss Primm Blog) Here are the first lines of Knotty Problems, Book 3 of the Justix Files

Late Monday Morning

I yearned for two things. One was to work as a detective again.

Six months ago, I left the West Hollywood Division amid scandal and suspicion, reassigned to police academy duty. I was exiled to serve as an instructor, a position any other cop would be honored to take, because my skills were too valuable to lose. Today, I’m walking back into the West Hollywood station in my Class B blues instead of a detective’s plain clothes, announcing myself at the front desk like a stranger, and accepting a visitor badge to enter the building I used to belong to.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve been asked to report here, but I can guess. With the Weldon Phillips case all but officially declared cold, I’m still the prime witness for the events that preceded his disappearance, and I’m about to get grilled again.

The reception area hadn’t changed at all since the two years when I first reported as a rookie detective. Blue-gray walls, two rows of white plastic and chrome wire chairs, and a wall to the left of the reception window were painted a brighter shade of blue-gray with the LAPD crest and a row of framed photos of command staff marching in a straight “blue” line.

McQuire, my former partner, opened the locked stairwell door and held it open.

“Well?” she asked with a lift of her dark eyebrows.
